Minute to Win It

Family Night! Although we physically can’t go as many places as we’d like to this summer…

…we thought we would bring you some “Minute to Win It” games you and your family can play together at home. These games are designed to bring quick challenging fun for any age and use materials you most likely already have around your home.

But first an introduction!

Say hello to Syd’s big sister, Amanda!

Amanda is an incredible Early Childhood Educator and jumped at the opportunity to volunteer for a few behind the scenes tasks throughout the summer. She is loving all of the Batawa Summer Adventure Camp activities so far and was a fierce competitor in these games.

We tested out these 5 Minute to Win It- Family Night themed games: Apple Stack, Cereal Box Scramble, Skyscraper Build, Chopstick Move, and Keep it Up. Below are a description and pictures of each on how to play, materials you will need, and how many points are earned for each round.

Materials you will need for all 5 games.

Paper, pencil, timer, cereal box (cut up into 8 to 32 pieces, a ballon, a paddle or racket, paper plates, cheerios or candies, cups, chopsticks or skewers, and apples.

Round #1- Apple Stack

Grab a bag of apples and set a timer. The rule of this game is to stack as many apples on top of one another in a free-standing tower as possible in 1 minute. We recommend using an apple that has bumps on the bottom like Red Delicious to make them easier to stack. (If it falls over, you must start over from the beginning). Each apple successfully placed equals 1 point.

Round #2- Cereal Box Scramble

Using the front of a cereal box, cut up into pieces (8 to 32 pieces depending on age range). You have one minute to put back together. However many pieces you can place correctly is your score for this round.

Round #3- Skyscraper Build

You will need many plastic/styrofoam/paper cups and plates. Place a plate on top 1 cup. Build as many layers as possible for 1 minute. (If it falls over, you must start over from the beginning). Each fully assembled layer equals 1 point for your team.

Round #4- Chopstick Move

You will need 2 paper plates, a set of chopsticks or wooden skewers, and a package of candy or cereal. Each player has 1 minute to transfer as many candies/cereal as possible from the full plate to the empty plate. If you drop one, you must pick it back up and place it successfully in order to continue. Each candy/cereal moved equals 1 point for your team.

Round #5- Keep It Up

This game can be adapted to different items. You will need a balloon or a feather. Each player has to keep the balloon in the air by for 1 full minute without touching the ground. You can use an object like a hand or racket to hit it, or by using your breath. If it touches the ground at any point, you will minus a point for the team’s total score. Ifyou are hitting the balloon you get a point for each time you hit it (counting out loud helps to keep track).

Although we are big kids at heart…

…we needed actual kids to test out a few other Minute To Win It Games!

Round #1- Balloon Volleyball

Tie a streamer or string across a designated playing area similar to a volleyball net. You can play on single or group teams, start the game using the balloon as your volleyball. You can add your points to your total score or you could also do a 1 minute keep it up challenge.

Round #2- Unwrap the Mummy

Using a whole roll of streamers, wrap one team player up with the streamers. In the 1 minute time limit, the other player has to unwrap the mummy without ripping the streamer. If you unwrap it fully in 1 minute with rips in the streamer you earn 5 points for your team, or without ripping it equals 10 points.

**Safety- remember to never tie streamers around a team members’ neck or head.

Round 3- Card Stack

Using a deck of cards and plastic cups, start with a cup and then add a playing card on top. Stack another cup and then card. Build the highest free-standing tower possible in the 1 minute time limit, but remember if it falls over you need to start again! 1 point is earned for each successful layer of your tower.
