winter trails faq

+ How much does it cost to access the Batawa Trails?

The Batawa Trails are free and open to the public year round unless posted otherwise.

+ Do I need snowshoes?

Snowshoes are optional. Many people prefer snowshoes after a snowfall or when the trails are icy (winter cleats are also an option). The Batawa South Trails are well trafficked and boot tracked therefore some people prefer to simply use boots.

+ Do you rent snowshoes?

We do rent snowshoes during ski hill hours of operation. You can walk up to our rental shop (wait times may vary) or pre-order online.

+ How do I find out about trail conditions?

Our ski hill slopes are mostly manmade snow therefore ski hill conditions do not reflect what you can expect on the hiking/snowshoe trails. Day-to-day temperatures, snowfall or rain is the best indicator of trail conditions. Trails can remain icy even on warmer days as they are not exposed to much sunlight.

+ Are the trails groomed?

No, they are not groomed.

+ Can I Cross Country Ski on the trails?

Some people XC ski on the flat, wider village trails after a snowfall. None of the trails are groomed. The Batawa South trails adjacent to the ski hill are NOT ideal for XC skiing.

+ What about winter biking?

Winter biking conditions are highly variable due to the significant temperature fluctuations we experience on a regular basis. When the trails are firm as a result of cold temps they may be suitable however expect to be biking over bumpy boot tracks if there is snow on the ground. Studded tires are necessary as there are lots of climbs and descents. Ice can be expected.

+ Where can I find a trail map?

The Batawa South Trails can be found on Trailforks, HERE.
